Farm-to-Table

The picNYC table by Haiko Cornelissen Architecten is an unusual object that aspires to transplant a snippet of rural life into your city apartment. Attuned to the growing phenomenon of urban farming, the folded aluminum table might blend into any chic urban interior, save for its tabletop of grass, soil and water-draining stones. The vegetated surface is designed to offer the surreal experience of picnicking indoors, providing an earthy bed on which to nestle a bottle of wine and place fine dishware. As the designers explained: “Suddenly, spilling water becomes a necessity instead of a problem and wine glasses need coasters not to prevent ring stains but to avoid tumbling.” More after the jump!

Handmade Portraits: The Sword Maker from Etsy on Vimeo.

Korehira Watanabe is one of the last remaining Japanese swordsmiths. He has spent 40 years honing his craft in an attempt to recreate Koto, a type of sword that dates back to the Heian and Kamakura periods (794-1333 AD). No documents remain to provide context for Watanabe’s quest, but he believes he has come close to creating a replica of this mythical samurai sword.

Masters of the collab, Tricker’s now find themselves shaking hands with the guys at Newcastle’s End Clothing. Digging into the archives the ‘End Hunting Co’ chose the long-wing Golosh country brogue. Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011 » steve-jobs-wired-photo

Photography: Wired.com

01. Steve Jobs, 1955 – 2011

“A visionary inventor and entrepreneur, it would be impossible to overstate Steve Jobs’ impact on technology and how we use it. Apple’s mercurial, mysterious leader did more than reshape his entire industry: he completely changed how we interact with technology. He made gadgets easy to use, gorgeous to behold and essential to own. He made things we absolutely wanted, long before we even knew we wanted them. Jobs’ utter dedication to how people think, touch, feel and interact with machines dictated even the smallest detail of the computers Apple built and the software it wrote.” (wired)

Ceramic Artist Becky Grunder at Work

I seem to have developed a bit of a fascination with ceramics recently, so naturally when filmmaker Chris Grunder brought this insightful short film about a ceramic artist at work, I was compelled to watch on and try to learn a little more. We get an almost ten minute introduction into the artist Becky who actually turns out to be the filmmakers mother, as she explains her passion for creating, and shows us a trick or two on the wheel.

Thanks to lifelounge for pointing us towards this exceptional feat of design and construction by Dutchman Jan Gunneweg. An industrial designer by trade, he has turned his attention to his homeland’s favourite mode of transport, the bike. Everything with the exception of the tyres are made of wood, an amazing piece.

Woolrich Woolen Mills Para Boots

With Mark McNairy being the creative director of Woolrich Woolen Mills, it comes with no surprise that the brand has been paying a little more attention to their footwear in recent seasons. For Autumn/Winter 2011 they have just released the new Para Boot. The derby brogue boots feature a mix of pebble leather and melton wool on the upper, with the outcome being simply beautiful. We would call it an outdoor chic look, perfectly fusing the look of a classic Made in England boot with a rougher outdoor look. Nitty Gritty has them in stock now.

Will Leather Goods è un piccolo brand americano di accessori in pelle, che si era fatto notare nella scorsa edizione del Pitti FW11 - anche per le numerose borse in canvas che ha distribuito a piene mani ai visitatori -. Lists: To-dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists’ Enumerations

On view at The Morgan Library through October 2, 2011, Lists takes a humorous look at a ubiquitous part of our daily lives.

From the weekly shopping list to the Ten Commandments, our lives are full of lists—some dashed off quickly, others beautifully illustrated, all providing insight into the personalities and habits of their makers. The exhibition celebrates this most common form of documentation by presenting an array of lists made by a broad range of artists, from Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder to H. L. Mencken, Eero Saarinen, Elaine de Kooning, and Lee Krasner. With examples such as Picasso’s picks for the great artists of his age (Gris, Léger, etc.), H. L. Mencken’s autobiographical facts (“I never have a head-ache from drink”), and Robert Smithson’s collection of quotations about spirals, the items on view are intriguing, revealing, humorous, and poignant.

The exhibition presents some eighty lists, including “to-dos,” paintings sold, appointments made and met, supplies to get and places to see, and people who are “in.” Some documents are historically important, throwing light on a moment, movement, or event; others are private, providing an intimate view of an artist’s personal life. Eero Saarinen, for example, enumerated the good qualities of New York Times art editor and critic Aline Bernstein, his soon-to-be second wife. Oscar Bluemner crafted lists of color combinations for a single painting. Picasso itemized his recommendations for the ground-breaking 1913 Armory show, and Grant Wood listed previous economic depressions, perhaps with the hope that the Great Depression would soon end. In the hands of their creators, these personal artifacts sometimes become works of art in and of themselves.

Here’s another woven belt to add to a growing collection. We say growing because if you’ve been following menswear it’s been hard to find a belt that isn’t woven.
